Learn about the fascinating history of the funeral industry from guest speaker Michael Mitchell, co-owner and manager of Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home (established in Chelsea, Michigan in1853). Discover how we now look to the past, to move forward with green burials and much more.

You are invited to a reception at the Museum on Main Street to celebrate the opening of "What's in a Name? Street, Roads & Stories of Washtenaw County" exhibit.

Using artifacts from our collection, “What’s in a Name? Streets, Roads & Stories of Washtenaw County” tells some of the stories behind the people and events that shaped this area. You’ll see the historical tandem bicycle that Junius and Ella Beal rode around Washtenaw County and the world, and law books used by John Allen and James Kingsley. You’ll find arrowheads, maps, photographs and paintings. There are dresses, fans, a set of hair jewelry, military items and many more historical treasures from our early residents and founders. There is even an interactive map to explore.

The exhibit runs through September 10, 2012 at the Museum on Main Street.

Drawing on the research for her recently published book, The Underground Railroad in Michigan, Carol E. Mull, will present a program detailing the history of Underground Railroad activities in the state and this area. Ms. Mull will take questions and have books available for purchase and signing.

Ms. Mull is a founding member and current Chairperson of the Michigan Freedom Trail Commission, a historic preservationist and an Underground Railroad scholar.

Fallen Women & Female Felons presented by Susan Nenadic

While the vast majority of known criminals were men, Washtenaw County did have some interesting women involved in crime. Their crimes range from petty ones such as pickpocketing and prostitution to the leader of a burglary gang involved in murder and a stock market scam artist. This program includes discussion of how the State of Michigan handled female convicts and the career of Emma A. Hall who was an early prison reformer and the first woman in Michigan to receive a state appointment.

Susan Nenadic has taught women’s history for non-credit classes at Washtenaw Community College, University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.

This educational program is free and open to the public.

The first Decoration Days were celebrated in the years after the Civil War when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers across the country. The "Behind the Lines: Horses, Hardtack, Hearbeats & Heroes" exhibit takes you behind the lines of the Civil War battlefront to reveal the back-story of the Union army experience, highlighting the important contributions made by residents of Michigan and Washtenaw County. You will encounter the ordinary, unsung details that shaped the experience of Washtenaw County men and women in the 1860s. You will learn about tents, horses, music and flags; meet a variety of Washtenaw County soldiers; and appreciate the memory of America’s deadliest war. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Brian Williams, Associate Archivist at the Bentley Historical Library, will talk about Pease kit homes.

When the housing inspector pointed out the stenciled joists to the new owner of a 1947 Cape Cod, it set off a search to find who manufactured the kit home. At first it was easier to find out who did NOT make the house. Research determined it was built by the Pease Woodwork Company n Cincinnati. The speaker will talk about his research on postwar kit homes and the Pease company.

A Step Back in Time - A Walking Tour of Historic Ann Arbor

Description & Difficulty: In conjunction with the Washtenaw Wanderers Volkssporting Club, this walk will incorporate a narrative (downloadable to your personal listening device) of the historical locations and people who have lived in this town. The route takes walkers to Kerrytown, UM Central Campus, Downtown Ann Arbor, the Old West Side, and Lowertown. This event is rated 1+ due to hilly terrain on city sidewalks (on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being easiest).

Mildred MacGregor, will present an impromptu question and answer program on her experiences during World War II.

Mildred A. Radawiec, Army Nurse Corps was part of the Third Auxiliary Surgical Group during World War II and was stationed in England, North Africa, France and Germany. She is 96 years old and lives in Ann Arbor.

Murders, thefts, scams and riots are not unique to the 21st century. Research by the WCHS exhibition committee has revealed that these crimes and more were committed in Washtenaw County in the 19th century.

Opening August 29 and running through November 29, "Murder, Mayhem and Mischief: Crime in Wastenaw County in the 19th Century." will give Museum on Main Street visitors an opportunity to learn how thes crimes were committed and solved and how the perpetrators were punished -- or not!

Visitors are invited to test their own observations, knowledge and intellectual skills in crime solving.

An exhibit depicting the story of immigrants coming to Washtenaw County from 1820 to present. The exhibit focuses on why people at first did not come to Washtenaw County and why they finally did.

The exhibit is arranged by ethnic groups with representative stories from throughout Washtenaw County. One room features immigration since 1950.

The exhibit has many interactive elements and two monthly contests offering $10 and $20 certificates to our gift shop.

Volunteers from the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County will be at the museum the first Sunday of the month during the exhibition to help patrons discover their own immigrant story.

This exhibit offers a look at the convention of weddings in Washtenaw County 1830 through the1950’s. This exhibit highlights the dresses from our collection such as the Yost, Beal and Safford dresses, and customs of weddings in the county. It is a refreshing surprise to see how very much customs have changed and how much they have not.

A flagpole donated by Fox Tent and Awning will be dedicated and an 1857 American flag will be raised to kick-off the Society's Sesquiecentennial celebration. The garden will be prepared with flowers from the 1857 period.

A special exhibit to celibrate the Society's 150th anniversary. The exhibit will portray the history of Washtenaw County using artifacts collected by the Society over the last 150 years. Some of the topics to tell the story are: Indians, early settlement and land speculation, agriculture, ethnic groups, and their influence, the County at war, politics, transportation, universities and business.

In addition, an exhibit area will tell the history of the Society from the first meeting on December 17, 1857 to the present. The house and its original owners will be also featured.

Only one month left to complete your Passport to History and be eligible for a small prize or drawing.

Passport to History is a project sponsored by the Washtenaw County Historical Consortium, a group of representatives from historical organizations, institutions and agencies through-out Washtenaw County.

The passport is available at any participating location in the county. It is accompanied by a brochure listing the participating venues, such as Museum on Main Street, Kempf House, Cobblestone Farm, Hack House in Milan, Ypsilanti Historical Society Museum and many others.

When you visit a site, have the passport signed and dated. Visiting twelve sites makes you eligible for a small prize and visiting fifteen sites enters you in a drawing for one of three prizes worth $50 at any participating museum gift shop.

The project runs through June 30, 2007. Eligible passports must be received by July 6, 2007. The drawing will be held July 8, 2007 at Parker Mill during Huron River Day.

The regular meetings of the Washtenaw County Historical Society take place on the third Sunday of the month. In 2006, that date coincides with Easter. The regular meeting of the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County takes place on the fourth Sunday of the month.

This year the two groups are holding a combined meeting in the Education Building of St Joseph Mercy Hospital. The program will be talks about the origins of the two groups.

University Commons is located near Huron Parkway and Glacier Way in northeast Ann Arbor, not far from Plymouth Road and US 23.

Patricia Majher, a graduate of Eastern Michigan University's Program in Historical Preservation, and Grace Shackman, who has a B.A. in history from U-M and an M.A. in history from EMU, will conduct a slide presentation of the cobblestone buildings of the county. Limited parking is available in museum's parking lot which is entered from N Main St, first driveway north of Beakes. Parking is also possible on the adjacent streets. Public parking is available in the structure, two blocks away, at W Ann and N Ashley Streets.

This exhibit focuses on those exceptional women in Washtenaw County that were employed in professions where women were not the norm. Among the professions explored are educators at the University of Michigan, Michigan Normal at Ypsilanti, and in the public and private sector; saloonkeeper, Mrs. Catherine Schumacher; bakers, Mrs. William Caspary and Mrs. Hangsterfer; physicians, Eliza Mosher, Sophia Hartley, and Jeanne B. Solis, who was one of the founders of Mercywood Hospital; artist, Katie Rogers; lawyers, Mary Foster, Helen McAndrew; as well as businesswomen, Olivia B. hall, Emma Hall, Bertha Muehlig, and Lucretia Gilllett. The exhibit will display an aspect of the life of working women in a time when working women went unheralded.
