| Description: |  Using artifacts from our collection, “What’s in a Name? Streets, Roads & Stories of Washtenaw County” tells some of the stories behind the people and events that shaped this area. You’ll see the
historical tandem bicycle that Junius and Ella Beal rode around Washtenaw County and the world, and law books used by John Allen and James Kingsley. You’ll find arrowheads, maps, photographs and paintings. There are dresses, fans, a set of hair jewelry, military items and many more historical treasures from our early residents and founders. There is even an interactive map to explore.
The exhibit runs through September 10, 2012 at the Museum on Main Street.
Hours are 12 Noon - 4PM on Saturday and Sunday or by appointment. If you see a white van in the parking lot during the week, stop in! Groups are welcome.

| Description: | Fallen Women & Female Felons presented by Susan Nenadic
While the vast majority of known criminals were men, Washtenaw County did have some interesting women involved in crime. Their crimes range from petty ones such as pickpocketing and prostitution to the leader of a burglary gang involved in murder and a stock market scam artist. This program includes discussion of how the State of Michigan handled female convicts and the career of Emma A. Hall who was an early prison reformer and the first woman in Michigan to receive a state appointment.
Susan Nenadic has taught women’s history for non-credit classes at Washtenaw Community College, University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.
This educational program is free and open to the public.

The first Decoration Days were celebrated in the years after the Civil War when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers across the country. While you are at the
Museum, enjoy our current exhibit, “Behind the Lines” to learn more about the war that Memorial Day first honored. So while you are out enjoying the three day weekend, stop in and take some time to honor the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice‚ those who gave their lives to protect our country and defend our right to enjoy the freedom we so treasure.
The "Behind the Lines: Horses, Hardtack, Hearbeats & Heroes" exhibit takes you behind the lines of the Civil War battlefront to
reveal the back-story of the Union army experience, highlighting the important contributions
made by residents of Michigan and Washtenaw County. You will encounter the ordinary, unsung
details that shaped the experience of Washtenaw County men and women in the 1860s. You will
learn about tents, horses, music and flags; meet a variety of Washtenaw County soldiers; and
appreciate the memory of America’s deadliest war. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the American Civil War.

When the housing inspector pointed out the stenciled joists to the new owner of a 1947 Cape Cod, it set off a search to find who manufactured the kit home. At first it was easier to find out who did NOT make the house. Research determined it was built by the Pease Woodwork Company n Cincinnati. The speaker will talk about his research on postwar kit homes and the Pease company.

19th Century." will give Museum on Main Street visitors an opportunity to learn how thes crimes were committed and
solved and how the perpetrators were punished -- or not!

The exhibit is arranged by ethnic groups with representative stories from throughout Washtenaw County. One room features immigration since 1950.
The exhibit has many interactive elements and two monthly contests offering $10 and $20 certificates to our gift shop.

The exhibit will portray the history of Washtenaw County using artifacts collected by the Society over the last 150 years. Some of the topics to tell the story are: Indians, early settlement and land speculation, agriculture, ethnic groups, and their influence, the County at war, politics, transportation, universities and business.
In addition, an exhibit area will tell the history of the Society from the first meeting on December 17, 1857 to the present. The house and its original owners will be also featured.

| Description: | In celebration of the Centennial of the University of Michigan's Department of Psychiatry, the Museum on Main Street will be hosting an exhibit on mental illness and its treatment from the Michigan perspective in the years covering 1906 to 2006. Major research in this area was done at this University in Washtenaw County. The exhibit will focus on depression and schizophrenia and how these illnesses have changed in diagnosis and treatment over the last hundred years. The exhibit, curated by Dr. Laura Hirshbein of the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry will also focus on how psychiatry changed in its approach and practices over this time period.
Our Open House will be on Sunday, October 22 from 12 - 4 with an Informal talk by Dr. Hirshbein at 2 PM.

Passport to History is a project sponsored by the Washtenaw County Historical Consortium, a group of representatives from historical organizations, institutions and agencies through-out Washtenaw County.
The passport is available at any participating location in the
county. It is accompanied by a brochure listing the participating
venues, such as Museum on Main Street, Kempf House, Cobblestone Farm, Hack House in Milan, Ypsilanti Historical Society Museum and many others.
When you visit a site, have the passport signed and dated. Visiting twelve sites makes you eligible for a small prize and visiting fifteen sites enters you in a drawing for one of three
prizes worth $50 at any participating museum gift shop.
The project runs through June 30, 2007. Eligible passports must be received by July 6, 2007. The drawing will be held July 8, 2007 at Parker Mill during Huron River Day. |

Admission is $2 for adults and children, $8 for families (3 and under free). Current members of the Cobblestone Farm Association are free, and annual memberships may be purchased at the event. Cobblestone Farm Museum is located at 2781 Packard Rd., Ann Arbor. 734/994-2928.
Cobblestone Farm Museum was originally a two-family home. Benajah Ticknor, a U.S. Naval surgeon, and Heman Ticknor, Whig Politician and farmer, shared occupancy of this stone structure with their families. Being restored and interpreted to reflect its mid-nineteenth century appearance, the farm provides a view of past rural life in Washtenaw County. Today the site is administered through the Ann Arbor Department of Parks and Recreation in a partnership with the Cobblestone Farm Association. |

Among the professions explored are educators at the University of Michigan, Michigan Normal at Ypsilanti, and in the public and private sector; saloonkeeper, Mrs. Catherine Schumacher; bakers, Mrs. William Caspary and Mrs. Hangsterfer; physicians, Eliza Mosher, Sophia Hartley, and Jeanne B. Solis, who was one of the founders of Mercywood Hospital; artist, Katie Rogers; lawyers, Mary Foster, Helen McAndrew; as well as businesswomen, Olivia B. hall, Emma Hall, Bertha Muehlig, and Lucretia Gilllett. The exhibit will display an aspect of the life of working women in a time when working women went unheralded. |
